ABOUT THE ARTIST
Suzette Clements comes from an artistic family and has always been passionate about art. She grew up as a military child, moving many different places, but when her father retired, the family settled in Nederland, Texas. There she attended Nederland High School being involved in many school and community art projects. At that time, her desire was to attend college to earn a Commercial Art degree. She is now pursuing her college dream. She will earn her Associates of Fine Arts from Central Texas College in June 2020.
She is not only a talented artist with conventional media, but also an expert seamstress. She designs, creates and sews costumes for Renaissance festivals. She is even a talented martial artist being a 3rd degree Black Belt and Texas state champion.
Suzette is a member of the Killeen Civic Art Guild and is currently showing her works in a KCAG exhibit at the Vive le Arts Performing Art Theater in Killeen. Her works were also chosen to be included in Byways, a Central Texas College annual arts publication. Four works were chosen for the years she submitted, 2013 and 2019, the greatest number of works from a single artist each of those years.
She currently lives with her husband, Ret. Major Randy Clements in Killeen, Texas. She has three children and three grandchildren.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always enjoyed painting, drawing, sewing and many others art forms. My time being a military spouse travelling this country and the world has given me a multitude of places and diverse experiences to inspire my work.
I began painting on porcelain in 2007, after inheriting all my late grandmother’s supplies. This style of painting was popular in the 50’s and 60’s but has since become a dying art. I was lucky enough to find an excellent teacher, Vicky York. She taught me not only the technique for painting and the firing of porcelain, but also much about the elements and principles of art. I loved painting flowers and birds as you will see examples here on my page.
Inspiration also comes from the art classes I am taking in college. My favorite instructor, Regina Allen, pushes me beyond my comfort zone into trying new media, new perspectives and to explore further than what I think I can. She has motivated me to expand my thinking and delve into the world of abstracts; concepts that I am thoroughly enjoying! I have a newfound appreciation for abstract art and have realized that art is not just the drawing or painting of realistic subjects. I have learned that I do not have to have a result in mind when I start a piece; that it is the art of creation that moves me. In other words, it is not the destination but the journey.
I hope you enjoy my art!
